Foça

Foça

The district of Foça is situated on the site of the ancient city of Phocaea and is said to have been founded by the very same people who founded the French city of Marseilles, Attalia in Corsica and Ampurias in Catalonia.

Foça is one of the Cittaslow cities in Türkiye.

Foça is a coastal town in İzmir whose name comes from the seals that still inhabit its shores. Known as "Phokaia" in antiquity, this ancient harbour city later came to be known as Foça, while maintaining its historical identity over the centuries.

Narrow streets lined with colourful stone houses reflect a lived-in sense of continuity rather than a staged past. Shaped by the Mediterranean climate, Foça stands out with its deep blue sea and officially recognised clean bays.

Karakum Beach, Burunucu Beach, Kosova Beach, and Mersinaki Cove define the town’s shoreline, offering spaces not only for swimming but also for an enjoyable time by the water. Activities such as windsurfing and daily boat tours provide alternative ways to engage with the sea while respecting the town’s rhythm.

Foça’s cuisine reflects both Aegean and Mediterranean influences and is largely based on seafood. Local fish varieties, meze (appetiser plates), and olive oil dishes shape the table. Foça yoghurt holds a special place among regional products. Ice cream, especially mastic and honey almond flavours, is widely preferred.

At local markets, you can find homemade tomato paste, tarhana, dried herbs, jam varieties, and other natural products that carry the character of the region beyond the coast.

As one of İzmir’s notable tourist areas, Foça offers a wide range of accommodation options. You will mostly find pensions and boutique hotels, while resort hotels are available if you are looking for more comprehensive services and facilities.
