Day 1: Xanthos-Letoon Archaeological Site

Your discovery of the Lycian archaeological sites and journey through time begins with Xanthos-Letoon, located on the border between modern Muğla and Antalya.

Although these two archaeological sites were distinct, UNESCO and official resources have preferred them as a combined cultural and historical entity due to their close geographical, political, and religious ties.

Your first destination will be Letoon, the central sanctuary and religious centre for the people of Lycia. Several archaeological finds have shown that its history can be traced back to the 8th century BCE. Letoon was founded in the name of Leto, the mother of the mythological gods Apollo and Artemis. You should visit the three temples dedicated to them, as well as the Hellenistic theatre and the inscriptions.

You can reach the Xanthos Archaeological Site in approximately a 15- to 20-minute drive from Letoon. Xanthos was one of the capitals of Lycian civilisation and one of the oldest known urban settlements in the region. History lovers must see the unique funerary monuments, such as the Harpy Tomb and the Nereid Monument, which blend Lycian traditions with Hellenistic influence.

Since these archaeological sites are large and detailed, visiting them will fill most of your day. In the evening, you can enjoy the unique flavours of Mediterranean cuisine at one of the elegant nearby restaurants and rest up for the next part of your journey.

Day 2: Patara

On the second day of the Lycian archaeological sites route, you will wander through Patara and the surrounding natural beauties. In Patara, where ancient stories blend with natural wonders, you'll create everlasting memories.

Patara was the capital of the Lycian civilisation after Letoon, and one of the most important port cities. Apart from its administrative importance, the city also held religious significance as the supposed birthplace of Apollo, and later became known as the birthplace of Saint Nicholas.

At the heart of the site lies the Bouleuterion, where representatives of the Lycian League once gathered to shape collective decisions. Patara reflects the strength of this unique political structure, often regarded as one of the earliest examples of a federative system of governance in the ancient world. It gives a clear sense of civic life and shared representation in Lycia, highlighting the site’s political and historical significance.

You can also explore the remains of the Roman triumphal arch, granary, lighthouse (considered one of the oldest in the world), and the main street with its ancient colonnade. Today, Patara is not only known for its remnants but also for its long, unspoiled beach and ecological importance.

After exploring the site, you can enjoy swimming at the calm, clear Patara Beach. Patara represents the cycle of life and death, with its beach where Caretta caretta turtles nest and ancient remnants that preserve traces of past civilisations.

Day 3: Kaş, Antalya

In the first two days of the route, you will discover the two different capitals and the religious centre of Lycian civilisation. Before continuing to the other significant destinations, you can rest and enjoy Kaş, one of the most beautiful regions of Antalya

Kaş is widely known as the diving centre of Antalya, with numerous underwater sites including sunken ships and ancient remnants. You should experience diving in the clear waters of the Mediterranean and explore its rich biodiversity.

If you’re looking for a peaceful location to swim and sunbathe, cooling off in the turquoise and clear waters of Kaputaş Beach is like a summer dream. This coastal town will be more charming as you wander through its narrow streets, lively cafés, and artisan shops.

By joining the Kekova boat tour, you can see the surrounding natural beauties on the turquoise sea. With this little break where you enjoy the Mediterranean flavours and rest your soul, you are ready for more.

Day 4: The Archaeological Sites of Olympos and Phaselis

On the last day of the route, you will meet with the two remarkable port cities of this civilisation, which are Olympos and Phaselis. You will follow the traces of the past by visiting these two cities, which were frequented by maritime trade at that time.

Olympos Archaeological Site is located near Mount Olympos (Tahtalı Dağı), in modern Antalya. The site was likely founded in the Hellenistic period, around the 2nd century BCE, and was an important port and cultural centre. Its natural beauty, along with remnants of Roman baths, a theatre, and sarcophagi, highlights its historical richness and its role within Lycian civilisation.

After exploring this site hidden among the green and blue hues of the Mediterranean, you can swim and relax on the Olympos Beach.

Phaselis Archaeological Site was another prominent port city in the Lycian region, founded in the 7th century BCE. In the last destination of your route, you will visit another city surrounded by various natural beauties.

You should visit its well-preserved harbour street, aqueduct, baths, and agora, which reflect its importance as a commercial hub in ancient times. When you finish exploring this site by the sea, you can head to the beach.
