In the Morning

Start your day on the waterfront at Dolmabahçe Palace, stretching between Kabataş and Beşiktaş along the Bosphorus. Built in the mid-19th century as the main residence and administrative centre of the Ottoman dynasty, the palace combines European architectural styles with Ottoman details.

Inside the palace, you will explore the official and private sides of court life by wandering through halls and corridors. Crystal chandeliers, staircases, wall paintings and carpets show how the palace was used for receptions, diplomacy and everyday living. Guided or audio tours help you understand the plan of the building and the roles of different sections.

Afterwards, step outside to see the Dolmabahçe Clock Tower, standing near the palace entrance with its four-sided structure and detailed stonework. From here, a short walk takes you to the National Palace Painting Museum, housed in the restored Crown Prince Residence.

The museum presents 19th and early 20th-century works from the palace collections, including paintings by Ottoman and European artists who worked for the court. After seeing these unique artworks, you can take a break for tea or Turkish coffee at the museum’s café overlooking the Bosphorus.

At Midday

Around midday, head to Ihlamur Pavilion, commissioned in the 19th century. The complex consists of two small pavilions set within a garden that was once a favourite promenade for the court. You can visit the main pavilion, where richly decorated interiors, stucco work and ceiling details reflect the aesthetics of the period.

For lunch, you can stay in the area and eat at the café inside or just outside the Ihlamur grounds, choosing simple dishes such as gözleme with cheese or potatoes, grilled köfte with salad or a light soup with fresh bread.

Then, walk towards Beşiktaş to see the local rhythm of the district. You can visit local bakeries and small markets all close together, before you move uphill again towards Yıldız.

In the Evening

Your last destination will be Yıldız Palace, set on a hill above Beşiktaş among trees and gardens. Recently opened as a museum, Yıldız was one of the last major palace complexes of the Ottoman Empire, formed by a series of pavilions, service buildings and green spaces behind high walls.

You can visit selected sections such as the main museum areas and pavilions, seeing rooms with wood panelling, ornate ceilings and objects from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

As evening approaches, return towards the Beşiktaş coastline. For dinner, choose a restaurant close to the shore or near the ferry piers.

You can order grilled fish, seasonal meze plates, salads with herbs and lemon, or meat dishes such as kebap or lamb baked in clay pots. Finish the day with a slice of traditional dessert, like sütlaç or revani, and a cup of tea or Turkish coffee.
