Day 1
Start your Ayder journey with a delightful breakfast. The region’s famous corn bread and “muhlama” will not disappoint. Enjoy the corn bread warm with a touch of local butter. Muhlama (melted cheese and cornmeal), Rize’s renowned speciality, is similar to a local fondue. It consists of a delicious slow-cooked slurry with corn flour, butter and a special cheese.
After breakfast, visit the luxurious facilities at the Ayder thermal springs, whose 55-degree waters draw visitors seeking relaxation. Even in Ottoman times, people travelled here for its soothing effects. Today, the springs offer a complete experience for cleansing and rejuvenation.
Then, head over to Gelintülü Waterfall, an impressive natural sight with its height exceeding 100 metres. It is named after its appearance, resembling a bridal veil, making it a favourite among photographers and nature lovers. At the point where the waterfall meets the stream, the calming sound of the water and the sweeping mountain views create a profound feeling.
Your next destination is Fırtına Valley. It is listed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as a protected area. The valley is also home to the Fırtına River, one of Türkiye’s most famous rafting routes. Once you step into the valley, the powerful waters descending from the Kaçkar Mountains will instantly captivate you.
For dinner, treat yourself to the diverse dishes of Black Sea cuisine. For example, anchovies are the base element of authentic Rize cuisine. This small fish is the main ingredient of many recipes, including anchovy bread, steamed anchovies, and rice pilaf with anchovies. And since Rize hosts 60% of Türkiye’s tea plantations, this is the perfect opportunity to end your day with a fragrant cup of regional tea.
Day 2
To begin your second day, make your way to Kaçkar Mountains National Park. The park stands out for its rich vegetation, wildlife, and mountaineering opportunities. You can easily find hiking routes suitable for all levels. Throughout the area, you’ll also come across glacial lakes, glacial valleys, cirques, and set lakes along with glaciers.
From here, continue toward Avusor Plateau, whose raw nature is perfect for stunning photos and fresh air fun. Sitting at an altitude of 2700 metres, the plateau is ideal for hiking, camping, and taking in the spectacular views of the Kaçkar Mountains.
Palovit Waterfall is one of the unmissable spots to experience the natural beauty of Ayder Plateau. It drops from a height of 15 metres, and offers refreshing surroundings, amazing hiking trails, and pleasant picnic areas.
You can also add Huser and Pokut plateaus in your route. At Huser Plateau, striking views created by the fog clouds in the morning hours are simply breathtaking. Similarly, Pokut Plateau reaches an altitude of 2000 metres and rewards with serene panoramas that capture the spirit of the highlands.
