Day 1: Göbeklitepe

Your journey begins in Göbeklitepe, a site that is believed to be the birthplace of civilisation. You can spend the day exploring this magical place and its impressive remnants of a striking example of the first Neolithic settlements.

Göbeklitepe was first discovered in 1963 and has become known as the oldest known monumental structure in the world, which was probably used in connection with social events and rituals. It consists of circular and oval stone structures built around 9600 BCE. Each structure features large T-shaped pillars arranged in a circle, with two taller pillars at the centre.

The pillars are carved with animals and abstract symbols, and likely represent human figures. These enclosures were used for ritual purposes and were later deliberately buried. Newer layers sit on top of older ones, showing that the site was used for many centuries. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, and interest has been increasing since then. You can wander through this significant archaeological site and see one of the oldest living spaces of humankind.

After visiting the site, explore the city centre and Şanlıurfa cuisine. Explore the local markets to buy authentic spices from traditional herbalists and bring the flavours of the region home with you. Sampling Şanlıurfa’s rich culinary delights is essential for any visitor keen to understand the city’s culture.

You can first try the world-famous Urfa kebap and lahmacun. The city’s signature Şanlıurfa-style grilled liver kebap, another renowned dish of the city’s culinary culture, is typically served with warm flatbread and spicy salad. To spend the night and rest for the next destination, you can stay in one of the hotels near the city centre.

Day 2: City Centre and Balıklıgöl

On the second day, continue your discovery through the city centre to see the legendary Balıklıgöl and explore the Şanlıurfa Museum.

You can start your visit with Balıklıgöl, the symbol of Şanlıurfa, known for its captivating religious and mythological story dating back to the time of Prophet Abraham. According to Islamic tradition, Balıklıgöl is the place where Prophet Abraham was thrown into the fire by King Nimrod for opposing idolatry.

The fire was turned into water, and the burning wood was transformed into fish. The fish in the lake are now considered sacred and are believed by some to have healing or spiritual powers. This legendary site is a meaningful place for anyone curious about the roots of faith and myth in Anatolia.

After Balıklıgöl, the Şanlıurfa Museum will be an ideal choice for history enthusiasts. It is one of Türkiye’s most diverse archaeological collections, and holds the largest Neolithic collection in the world. The museum also showcases a rich timeline of civilisations, from ancient Mesopotamians to the Romans, and early Islamic dynasties.

Amazon Queens Mosaic and the Orpheus Mosaic must be seen for their historical significance and their aesthetic structure. Both are displayed at the nearby Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum, which is part of the same archaeological complex.

The Amazon Queens Mosaic uniquely depicts the legendary female warriors of mythology in vibrant detail by showcasing powerful battle scenes from the 3rd century CE. Equally impressive is the Orpheus Mosaic, which illustrates the mythical musician Orpheus charming wild animals with his lyre, symbolising harmony between humans and nature.

Once you've explored the museum, you can head to Şanlıurfa's famous Coppersmiths' Bazaar to pick up handmade gifts for your loved ones. For a bit of rest before tomorrow’s destination, you can stay overnight in the city centre.

Day 3: Harran

The last destination will be Harran, an authentic and historic district of Şanlıurfa. Its stone buildings with unique shapes create a fairy-tale ambience, an inspirational region for professional and amateur photographers. You can walk the streets of Harran and start exploring the region. The Beehive Houses of Harran, Harran City Gates, and Grand Harran Mosque were the most iconic structures that are now open to the public.

You can visit and take photographs of these inspiring buildings during your visit. In the evening, you can try Şanlıurfa’s famous kebap, lahmacun, and other local dishes here. Enhanced by the region’s unique spices, these flavours offer an authentic culinary experience and are perfect for those seeking something truly distinctive.
