Day 1: Safranbolu Old Bazaar and Historic Ottoman Houses

Safranbolu is one of Türkiye’s most remarkable old town centres and proudly stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town feels like a living museum of Safranbolu houses, each one a reminder of centuries past in the Ottoman Empire.

Begin your morning with a strong Turkish coffee and step inside the İzzet Mehmet Paşa Mosque, an elegant 18th-century construction by a grand vizier. Its dome form rises gently above the bazaar, welcoming visitors into a calm space of carved wood, soft lighting, and Ottoman detail. Known as a fevkani mosque, its entrance opens through a local shop, a feature that blends commerce and devotion in the rhythm of daily life.

From here, the path leads naturally to the Cinci Inn, once a caravanserai at the heart of Silk Road trade. Merchants and travellers once filled its vast stone courtyard with chatter and heavy loads of goods arriving from distant lands. Today, it lives on as a hotel, restaurant, and coffee house, yet still carries the echoes of long journeys and the relief of rest.

After breakfast, and perhaps a box of Safranbolu lokum tucked under your arm, take a stroll uphill to Hıdırlık Hill. From here, the town reveals itself in full, with orange-hued roofs lining the valley, narrow lanes twisting through the old quarter, and a panorama that explains why Safranbolu is so cherished.

Beyond the town’s gentle beauty lies something wilder: Tokatlı Canyon. Carved over thousands of years by the Hızar Stream, its limestone cliffs drop dramatically into green depths. Spanning the gorge, the 18th-century İncekaya Aqueduct offers a breathtaking reminder of Ottoman engineering.

A 9-kilometre hiking path follows the stream, letting you wander deeper into nature while never straying far from history. As the sun sets, return to the old centre, where Safranbolu’s streets glow softly under lanterns, ready to close the day in calm anticipation of tomorrow’s seaside journey.

Day 2: Amasra Castle and Beaches

The road into Amasra winds through lush cliffs, and just before the town appears, you arrive at the Kuşkayası Road Monument. Built between 41 and 54 CE, it is the only monument of its kind in Anatolia. Carved directly into the rock, it features a headless human-shaped statue, a Roman eagle symbolising sovereignty, and two inscriptions. Standing before it, you sense the blend of power, diplomacy, and permanence that the Romans etched into this landscape.

Descending toward the coast, the elegant arch of the Kemere Bridge welcomes you. This single-span stone bridge links the mainland to Boztepe Island, its stones worn smooth by centuries of footsteps. Crossing over feels like stepping into a canvas, with the Black Sea sparkling on both sides. At the end of the bridge, Amasra Castle rises in layered history. Its walls, first laid by the Romans and later strengthened by Eastern Romans (Byzantine) and Genoese, stretch across both the mainland and the island.

Inside the complex, you can trace narrow alleys, peer up at towers, and discover traces of chapels and cisterns that once served the community within. From the ramparts, the view spills across a scene of fishing boats, clustered red rooftops, and the endless sweep of sea meeting sky.
