Day 1

On your first day, prepare to be dazzled by the city’s rich and diverse culture. Your first destination is the Batman Museum. Inside, you’ll see over 500 artefacts spanning from the Palaeolithic Period to the Middle Ages. Moreover, the museum houses a rich library of books and a laboratory for restoring artefacts from excavations.

Afterwards, head over to the Mor Kuryakos Monastery. Situated in the Beşiri district of Batman, this monastery stands out as a prominent structure that reflects Syriac culture. Believed to be built in the 5th century, it features thick stone walls, pointed arched entrances and traces of frescoes. Its religious atmosphere reveals the multicultural essence of Batman.

Continue to the Monastery of Mor Aho, situated in the rural area of Banı Mahar, 2 km north of Üç Yol village. It is believed to have been built during the time of the ancient Syriacs in Hasankeyf. You can observe the original wall structure on the eastern facade of the church, which was constructed from cut stone, rubble stone and slaked lime.

Day 2

Spend your second day exploring the historic town of Hasankeyf. The region lies in the heart of Mesopotamia and is one of humanity's oldest settlements. There is no clear information on when or by whom the settlement was built. Plus, the region was unfortunately flooded as a result of the water retention of the Ilısu Dam in 2020.

But the good news is that Hasankeyf still transports you to another world that will leave you in awe. You can take a boat tour and sail through the magnificent atmosphere and wonders of Hasankeyf.

Moreover, you can enjoy the striking view of the Tigris River at the Hasankeyf Archaeological Site. This historical site was recognised as a protected area and offers impressive spots such as a rock-carved inn, more than 4000 caves, and Hasankeyf Castle.

Next, make your way to the Hasankeyf Museum. Inside, you will find inspiring artefacts unearthed from excavations at the ancient city, parts of which are now submerged. Plus, the museum displays terracotta and stone pieces from the Neolithic Age.

Another great destination along the way is the Zeynel Bey Tomb, attracting many faith and culture travellers. Built during the era of the Aq Qoyunlu principality, it perfectly reflects the architecture of the period and features intricate tiled decorations and inscriptions.

Of course, there are plenty of tasty local dishes from Batman you can enjoy during your trip. For example, you can try the local soup yoğurtlu leben, kaburga dolması (stuffed ribs), mumbar dolması (stuffed intestines), tırşık, or havdel.
