The jewel of the Aegean, İzmir has been renowned since antiquity for its legendary thermal heritage, including the historic Agamemnon Springs, which it now combines with modern healthcare and wellness facilities. More than simply a major port and commercial centre, the city boasts an extensive geothermal network stretching from Balçova to Çeşme and from Dikili to Seferihisar. Complementing this remarkable geothermal heritage is the nearby Pergamon Asklepion, widely recognised as one of the most important healing centres of the ancient world, together with the legacy of the celebrated physician Galen, reflecting a tradition of health and healing that spans thousands of years.

One of İzmir's defining strengths is the exceptional diversity of its geothermal waters. In addition to well-known thermal centres such as Balçova, Nebiler, Reisdere, Karakoç and Gülbahçe, the province is home to numerous other geothermal areas, including Bayındır, Mahmudiye, Paşa, Geyiklidağ, Güzellik, Dereköy, Bademli, Ilıcagöl, Cumalı, Çeşme and Kelalan. Mineral concentrations range from approximately 900 mg/L to more than 40,000 mg/L, reflecting an extraordinary diversity of hydrogeochemical characteristics. Classified predominantly as mixed thermo-mineral waters, these springs are used in balneotherapy as complementary therapies, particularly for rheumatic conditions, musculoskeletal disorders, selected dermatological conditions and orthopaedic rehabilitation, with their therapeutic benefits supported by scientific studies.

The thermal waters of Çeşme, where geothermal springs meet the Aegean Sea, together with Balçova's internationally recognised physical medicine and rehabilitation facilities, have established İzmir as one of Türkiye's leading destinations for holistic health and wellbeing. Combined with the healthy lifestyle of the Aegean; shaped by extra virgin olive oil, fresh seafood and wild herbs, its mild climate and exceptional geothermal resources offer visitors a destination where health, culture and wellbeing come together in a truly holistic experience.
