The Cradle of Pharmacology: Discover a place where nature, knowledge and healing came together to change the course of medical history.

Set within the fertile plains of ancient Cilicia, in today’s southern Türkiye, Anavarza invites you to explore one of the world’s most remarkable, yet still hidden destinations of medical heritage. Nestled in Adana’s Kozan region, this ancient settlement was once a powerful capital and cultural centre. Anavarza is not only an archaeological treasure, but a place where the foundations of modern pharmacy were first laid.

This is the birthplace of Pedanius Dioscorides, the visionary physician and botanist whose work continues to shape medicine today. Serving in the Roman Imperial Army, Dioscorides travelled extensively, observing and documenting the healing properties of nature. The result was De Materia Medica, a groundbreaking work that defined pharmacology for over 1,500 years and earned him recognition as the Father of Pharmacy.

But what makes Anavarza truly extraordinary is not only its history, it is its living landscape.

Surrounded by the rich biodiversity of the Cilician plains, nourished by the ancient Ceyhan River (known in antiquity as the Pyramus) and framed by the majestic Taurus Mountains, this region remains a natural sanctuary of medicinal plants. Many of the herbs once studied by Dioscorides still grow here today, connecting past and present in a way few places on earth can offer.

Walking through Anavarza is more than visiting ancient ruins; it is stepping into the origins of herbal medicine. It is an invitation to reconnect with nature, to rediscover the roots of healing, and to experience a destination where science and the natural world first came together in harmony.
