Constructed in Edirne in 1488, the Sultan Bayezid II Complex represents one of the most significant expressions of the Ottoman holistic approach to healthcare. At its centre stands the hospital, which became particularly renowned for its treatment of mental health conditions.
Historical sources indicate that the therapeutic environment incorporated flowing water, music and carefully designed gardens as complementary elements supporting patients' wellbeing. Its remarkable acoustics, elegant fountain and tranquil landscape demonstrate an understanding of healthcare that embraced both physical and emotional wellbeing. Today, the complex houses the Trakya University Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum and is included on UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.
