Founded in 1550 by Hürrem Sultan, the wife of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, Haseki Sultan Hospital became one of the leading charitable hospitals of the Ottoman Empire. The institution provided care across a range of medical disciplines, including internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology and mental health, while physicians, surgeons, ophthalmologists and pharmacists delivered treatment according to the highest medical standards of the period.
Supported through a charitable endowment (waqf), the hospital offered consultations, treatment and medicines free of charge, ensuring access to healthcare for all members of society. Having served patients continuously for centuries, the historic complex remains part of today's Haseki Training and Research Hospital, preserving its enduring connection with Türkiye's medical heritage.
