Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin, who served for many years as a physician and scholar at the Amasya Hospital, is recognised as one of the leading surgeons of the Ottoman period. His renowned fifteenth-century work Cerrahiyyetü'l-Haniyye (Imperial Surgery) is among the earliest illustrated surgical treatises written in Turkish, describing surgical procedures, medical instruments and clinical techniques through detailed illustrations.
The work covers a wide range of medical fields, including general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and women's health. By incorporating his own clinical observations and practical experience, Sabuncuoğlu made a lasting contribution to the systematic transmission of surgical knowledge. Today, the Amasya Sabuncuoğlu Museum of Medical History preserves and presents this remarkable legacy through its collection of surgical instruments, manuscripts and historical exhibits.
