Lefke Cloth
Woven in the historic district of Osmaneli (formerly known as Lefke) in Bilecik and officially protected with a Geographical Indication (GI) registration, Lefke Cloth (Lefke Bezi) is a century-old traditional hand-loomed textile heritage. Born from the region's rich sericulture and cotton-growing culture, this certified fabric is hand-woven on traditional wooden looms using 100% natural cotton and threads.
Lefke Cloth is distinguished by its breathable texture, high moisture absorption, and durability. Historically used for crafting traditional towels, tablecloths, dowry items, and light garments, this registered weave is today modernized through local women's cooperatives and municipal workshops. It is transformed into a wide array of contemporary products, including dresses, scarves, home textiles, and accessories. Free from synthetic dyes and chemicals, Lefke Cloth stands as one of the most vital symbols of Bilecik's sustainable handicrafts and cultural heritage in Türkiye.
Osmaneli Lefke Stone
Quarried in and around the Osmaneli district of Bilecik, Lefke Stone (Lefke Taşı) is one of the most vital natural building materials shaping the region's historical and architectural identity. Celebrated for its workability, durability, and porous, breathable texture, it has been widely used in both residential construction and monumental structures for centuries.
Displaying soft shades of pale yellow, cream, and tan, Lefke stone is relatively soft and easy to carve when freshly extracted from the quarry, but hardens significantly upon exposure to air, making it highly resistant to weathering over time. This unique physical property made it the material of choice for the ground-floor walls, arches, and window frames of traditional Osmaneli mansions, as well as historic mosques and bridges. Today, frequently utilized in restoration works and context-sensitive modern architecture, Lefke stone stands as a defining element of Bilecik's local architectural heritage in Türkiye.
