Perge
Perge, one of Türkiye's cultural gems, is located 18 km east of Antalya city center. Aksu (Kestros) River (Aksu Nehri) was a factor that made the geographical location of the city unbelievably valuable in ancient times. It was also the life water of agriculture in the city.
Flourishing in the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE under Roman rule, Perge's architectural landscape mostly dates from this era. Yet, its history stretches back even further, with iconic twin towers from the 3rd century BCE marking the city's entrance. It is a good option to start exploring Perge by walking along these monumental towers built by Alexander the Great. These towers frame the main gate, leading to a 500-meter-long road that ends at a monumental fountain. Walking this path offers a tangible connection to the past, shared with historical figures like St. Paul, enhancing the visitor experience.
You should not leave Perge without seeing the aqua duct, the colonnaded street, the watchtower, the Roman bath, agoras, double-door shops, the monumental theater with a capacity of 12 thousand people, the mosaics covering the floor, and the horseshoe-shaped stadium, one of the most well-preserved and second-largest stadiums in Anatolia. It was a vibrant venue for sports and races, adding to the city's lively atmosphere.
The baths of Perge are one of the best examples of the Roman Period baths. You can walk through the colonnaded street, enjoy the water channel that was built in the middle to provide fresh water and cool air, see the shops and civil houses on either side of this street, and walk all the way up to the acropolis to enjoy the view.
The city's main street, once a bustling marketplace, showcases Perge's advanced urban planning and is renowned for its regular layout typical of Roman towns. This street was vital to the city’s infrastructure, featuring a water canal that not only fed four large fountains and two major baths but also supported local businesses on either side.
As a vital hub of ancient sculpture, Perge's treasures, including a stunning array of Roman statues, are prominently displayed at the Antalya Museum, enhancing visitors' appreciation of the city's grandeur.
Perge also holds a special place in Christian history as a frequent stop for St. Paul during his missions, marking the beginning of St. Paul's Way, a popular trekking route in Türkiye. This blend of historical depth and cultural richness makes Perge a profound journey through time.
Visitors can explore this ancient city until 21:00 in the summer.
