“Swan Lake,” the world’s most beloved classical ballet for over a century, is an epic fairy tale told through its uniquely virtuosic choreography and Tchaikovsky’s timeless music, which has never lost its appeal. It tells the story of Prince Siegfried, who falls in love with Princess Odette. The evil sorcerer Baron von Rothbart casts a spell that transforms Odette and her friends into swans. By day, they spend their time swimming together in a lake, and only at night do they return to human form. Only true love can break this spell, and Rothbart will use all his power to prevent it.

Tchaikovsky’s four-act ballet “Swan Lake,” composed in 1875–76, was first performed worldwide on March 4, 1877, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow with choreography by Julius Reisinger, it was presented to audiences at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on January 15, 1895, with the original choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. This new version achieved great success, establishing “Swan Lake” as one of the most important works in the global ballet repertoire. Most contemporary ballet companies also base their productions on this version. In particular, the contrast between the roles of the “White Swan” (Odette) and the “Black Swan” (Odile) is one of the most striking elements of this ballet.
