    Aspendos

The ancient city of Aspendos is located 40 km east of Antalya, on the Köprüçay River, which in antiquity was called the Eurymedon. Eurymedon River was famous in ancient times because of the Battle of the Eurymedon in the 5th century BCE between the Greeks and their allies and the Persian Empire of Xerxes I. The battle is known as the first battle that took place both on water and land.

Today, the site is primarily famous for the splendid Roman theatre known as the best-preserved and best-designed theatre of the Mediterranean during the Roman period. Following the theatre, the most important city ruins that can be visited are the aqueducts. The Aspendos aqueduct system is also one of the best-preserved examples of ancient waterways. Other important structures include the great basilica, the agora, the fountain, the aqueducts, and the two unique siphon systems which have been a source of fascination for archaeologists.

Aspendos is also one of the cities that continued its existence during the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) and Seljuk periods. In the famous theatre, it is possible to see the traces of Seljuk period repairs, especially on the monumental door extension in the middle of the facade and in the dark red zigzag patterned plaster coating on the facade. The stage building is thought to have been organized as a caravanserai where the Seljuk sultans stayed.

It has managed to survive until today thanks to the restoration and protection measures taken during the Seljuk era. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk also visited this place in 1930 and gave instructions for the restoration and reuse of the city.

Besides the night museum experience, in September, do not miss the chance to attend the Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival. This festival is one of the most prestigious and world-renowned events in Antalya. It has been organized by the Antalya State Opera and Ballet since 1994 and is held annually each June and July in one of the world’s most well-preserved ancient theatres, the ancient theatre of Aspendos. The mystical atmosphere of this magnificent theatre combined with the fascinating power of art offers unforgettable moments.

Summer hours for visiting the ancient city extend until 22:30.
